Jobs for Writers on the Internet
From LoveToKnow Freelance-Writing
Jobs for writers on the internet are relatively plentiful and can be a great way to break into the writing business. With newspaper and magazine sales dipping further and further, more and more writers are turning to the internet for work opportunities. Some writers have abandoned print publications entirely, opting for an all-digital journalism career.
Jobs for Writers on the Internet – Different Approaches
Just like there are a vast array of websites on the net, there are several different kinds of internet based writing jobs. Finding the right one for you depends on your experience as a writer as well as your interests. Here are some web writing jobs you may encounter:
Keyword/SEO Ghostwriting
No matter what kind of internet writing job you land, keywords and SEO are going to be an important consideration. Some jobs take things a step further, however. There are many companies operating on the net that hire writers to ghostwrite keyword dense articles. What does this mean? You’ll be given a keyword phrase – say, “buy insurance” – and you’ll be required to use that phrase a set number of times in a relatively brief article. You usually won’t know where your articles end up, and they will usually be assigned to you in bulk. For instance, you may be required to write 35 articles, 300 words in length, that each use the phrase “buy insurance” 10 times each.
These writing jobs can be frustrating for many people. As previously stated, SEO is a concern for all online writing, but these articles place the emphasis on SEO over good writing. They often pay very poorly, and some of the companies that offer this kind of work are not legitimate. However, some writers turn to this kind of work to boost their income while getting their writing careers off the ground.
Web Publications
You may find steady work writing for web based publications (not unlike the one you are reading now!). This work is essentially like writing for a magazine, but your work is published online instead of in print. The pay varies greatly for this type of web writing.
Online Versions of Print Publications
Almost every print publication now has a website that contains most of the material in their usual print issues, as well as internet-only bonus features. If you’re hankering to see your name in print, getting hired as an online content writer for a print publication can be a great foot in the door. Again, the pay varies a lot here, and may be calculated either per word or per piece.
Blogging
Blogging can be a great way to develop your voice online and build a reputation for yourself as a writer, but there are also companies that will pay you to blog for them. Usually, this kind of work takes the form of ghost blogging – you’ll do the writing, but you won’t be credited by name – but more and more web based publications are integrating bloggers into their sites in the same way that magazines and newspapers feature columnists. Yet again, the pay for this kind of work is all over the map and depends on your experience and the budget of the site/company.
